I have a 2004 282 with twin V-P 5.0 engines. While trying to change the oil today (first with a West Marine manual extractor, then with a 12v Jabsco pump system), I was unable to draw much oil from either engine-- a total of maybe 4 quarts (each engine w/ filter takes 5.5 qt). The extractor tube was fully inserted into the dipstick tubes (~38 inches of tube) and the engines had been run for 12-15 minutes to warm the oil. I had originally thought that it was maybe low on oil; when I went to add some, I put in about half of a quart and it overflowed. On a previous boat (sailboat with diesel engine), there was no problem taking suction from the engine or the transmission. Has anyone experienced a similar problem with taking suction from the sump on these VP engines?
Did you have the oil fill cap off when you were doing this? Also, did you try sucking directly through the dipstick tube instead of using the straw?
The extractors usually don't get all of the oil from the engine. If you got 4 quarts plus the nearly 1 quart that is in the engine, you did pretty good. While not the perfect scenario, the 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart still in the engine will be diluted with the new. Shawn
The first time out, it was 4 quarts in the extractor bucket, out of a total of 11 in both engines. It wasn't 4 quarts per engine. I went back today and used the garden hose fitting screwed onto the dipstick tube, then opened both oil fill caps on each engine (opening only one didn't vent it sufficiently to take suction). With that set-up, I pulled out about 7-8 quarts of oil (essentially drained each sump).
