Hello, I have a Volvo Penta 572 with a holley 2 bbl wondering if anyone know of an easy upgrade for carb?
Walt, the easiest way to upgrade is to change the intake manifold and carburetor to a 4 barrel. Holley, Carter and Edelbrock all make 4 barrel marine carbs. And remember, you cannot use an automotive carb. It must be for marine. Let me ask though....are you looking for more power, speed, acceleration? Shawn
I'm a Mercruiser guy and not too familiar with the Volvo engine models. Is the 572 a 4.3, 5.0 or 5.7? In any scenario you will need to change the intake manifold. I would check with Volvo and determine if your engine model was available with a 4 BBL carb and if other pieces besides the manifold and carb are needed to make the switch. Unfortunately Walt, making a boat go faster is usually an expensive project with little gain. The rule of thumb is to expect to drop a grand for every 1-2 MPH gained. This you won't want to hear but usually the very best, and most cost effective way, to make a boat go faster is to buy a faster boat. Unless you can do all of the work yourself, can find a used manifold and carb that you can rebuild, I can see this costing $1,000 or more and depending on the motor you may not see a lot of gain. Your signature does not say where you are located but I would look for a boat shop in your area that has done this type of an upgrade in the past and seek their input. Let us know what you decide to do. Shawn
