Shifter issues with my '96 220 Volvo 5.7Gi ... a few questions

Having occasional difficulty shifting into neutral when docking. sometimes misses neutral and goes into reverse. Shifter feels a bit sluggish, not buttery. Is original cable. Boat has about 650 hours on it, sits on lift when not used. Volvo DP.

1. Most likely a cable lube issue?
2. How do I get the Quicksilver 3000 box off of the side panel? Must I remove the side panel? If so, any helpful suggestions?
3. Is the shifter cable a simple replacement? Anyone with experience with it?
4. If not the cable, then probably the shift actuator? Please say no....

Any help will be appreciated.

 

Never mind....I figured it out. Now nice and smooth.
